Since 2017, the Toyota RAV4 has been the best-selling non-truck in America and is revered for its reliability and nonsense appeal. Now with its sixth generation and boasting a comprehensive upgrade in and out, I'm sure the RAV4 is better than ever. It's spacious and comfortable, and — because it's only available as a hybrid now - it requires very few stops at the pump while munching miles. The screen is a massive step up from the old version. And it's one of the most ergonomically classified cars I've ever driven.
After testing for a week, I'm happy to report that the new RAV4 feels like the default answer to the question right now: "What should I buy?" I scratched my head to find shortcomings and chose a few things to highlight throughout this story. The new RAV4 feels timely and sensible for those who are not yet ready to switch to EVs.
2026 Toyota RAV4 Design
The design evolution of the RAV4 is more predictable than radical, with Toyota taking over the same design language as the latest Camry. It was dangerous to ruin a car that sold about 50 million cars in the United States alone last year, so Toyota played it safe. It is a C-shaped daytime running light and color-matched grille with hexagonal elements that still make the look modern without trying too hard. It is 181 inches long, 73 inches wide and 66.5 inches tall, its dimensions are almost identical to those of the previous generation, except for the forest, GR sports, different due to the trim specialized makeup varies.

2026 Toyota "RAV4 inside
Inside, there's nothing that looks or feels like an old RAV4. The limited variant has a Softex-trimmed, hot and ventilated front seat that felt soft and comfortable but lacked adequate side enhancement, so you expect side movement around the twistier path. The center console has a functional design, everything you need is packed and nothing you need is packed. Drive mode buttons, gear selectors and volume knobs are located where your hands fall naturally and have a premium gunmetal finish. You get two wireless charging pads, packed under them, dual 45W USB-C ports, twin cup holders, and a deep bin under the armrest.
Weekly press loaners means that journalists like you really need to readjust their brains for every car setup. It doesn't quite reflect how the real owners, for weeks and months of familiarity, experience the car. Still, the RAV4 was one of those rare cars that I didn't have to readjust at all. All the features were exactly where instinct said they should be, and there was nothing essential behind the menu. For a vehicle that acts as a daily driver for hundreds of thousands of families and countless ride-share drivers. However, the big highlight of this interior is the gauge cluster and infotainment setup.
2026 Toyota RAV4 Software and Infotainment
The digital experience of the RAV4 is finally coming of age with its new 12.9-inch tablet-like infotainment screen (10.5 inches with lower trim) and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The RAV4 will also debut Toyota's latest Arene software-defined vehicle platform, which Toyota also plans to roll out to future models. To be clear, the user interface here isn't as advanced as the one, you'll find on Tesla and Rivian. But it's still a big step forward from the current Toyota's sticky and cluttered gauge clusters and infotainment displays, offering a more smartphone-like user interface and much more customization.
Shuffling the gauge cluster menu through the steering wheel control is now instantaneously greatly simplified and improves everyday ease of use. The central touch screen is sharp and responsive and comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For the first time, it now includes a built-in dash cam that uses front, rear, and blind spot cameras to record driving. It records in a continuous loop, automatically saves clips when an incident is detected, and allows you to download video via USB. You can also manually capture a 20-second clip if you want. It is a useful addition to making the aftermarket dash cam unit unnecessary.
But drive recorders continued to flag "driving incidents" for moments that felt completely routine and inconspicuous. It's a bit of a annoyance that Toyota could iron out with a software update.
2026 Toyota RAV4 Efficiency and Powertrain
At this point, "Toyota Hybrid is efficient" ranks as one of the inevitable certainties of life, alongside death and taxes. But the new RAV4 turned out to be more efficient than the other Toyota hybrids I drove. For small crossovers, it beats well above weight when it comes to road-stumbling ability. As before, Toyota is selling a plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4. But I tested the standard hybrid variant, which will be the main mainstay and volume seller of the lineup.
My car arrived with a tank full of fuel — 14.5 gallons — and an estimated range of nearly 600 miles. It has an EPA-rated combined efficiency rating of 41 miles per gallon. I observed a combined rating of 47 mpg and a rating of only cities up to 56 mpg bordering the plug-in hybrid territory. To put it in perspective, you can drive from San Francisco to Las Vegas or from New York City to Columbus, Ohio, in a single tank of gas. So how do you pull this off? The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine produces 226 hp with front-wheel drive trim and 236 hp in the AWD version. It is paired with 2 electric motors and a compact 1.0 kWh lithium-ion battery. The AWD trim adds a third e-motor to the rear axle for extra grip.
The first e-motor acts as a generator, collecting energy from the gas engine to replenish the battery, doubling as a starter motor and waking the car in almost complete silence, like an EV. The second motor drives the front wheel and supplies it back to the battery, restoring kinetic energy during coasting and braking while stepping in under hard acceleration. Like most modern hybrids, the car can run on pure electricity at low speed for a short distance, when the battery has enough charge. When you need more punches, the engine rotates seamlessly and the transition is almost imperceptible. And, importantly, its efficiency does not come at the expense of performance.
The 236 hp AWD powertrain has enough grunt for daily driving and confident highway overtaking. Better yet, unlike Crown Signia or Corolla Cross hybrids, the RAV4 punishes you with rough and tense engine notes when you put your feet down, of course, you still feel the rubber band effect from the e-CVT, but the cabin is much better off from those noises. It is certainly more sophisticated than before.
2026 Toyota RAV4 Ride and Handling
The RAV4 now features reinforced suspension mounting points and frame joints for improved handling and ride comfort. Toyota has developed a high damping adhesive that reduces micro-vibration and road noise. Even the suspension is the same independent struts in the front multi-link settings. In fact, the ride feels slightly more comfortable than the outgoing model, and its character clearly puts comfort first. It jumps prominently under braking, squats over acceleration, and has a certain conceit quality that makes it feel bigger than it is. None of that is particularly surprising for vehicles designed around the daily commute, highway cruising, and rideshare shifts.
It absorbed the dents of NYC - small and large — with real calm and minimal cabin shaking. The steering felt suitably light at low speeds and weighed with the build-up of speed, but I welcome a more direct touch to that response. The GR Sport trim feels more dialed when compared, but it was also less fun to drive based on tests earlier this year.
Verdict
With a starting price of $ 31,900 before destination rates, the new RAV4 will be $1,000 cheaper than the outgoing base hybrid and about $ 2,100 more than the old base gas-only trim. It is remarkable value for a comprehensively improved car. Even the entry-level LE is equipped right out of the box with a new digital gauge cluster, phone mirroring, and dual zone climate control. Adding a well-equipped cabin and its excellent hybrid efficiency makes the value proposition difficult to discuss.
The competition is also quite strong. The Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Mazda CX-50 Hybrid are all reliable choices. But the RAV4 has a better fuel economy rating than every one of them, and it feels the most modern in its company. Tucson and the CR-V are still waiting for a generation update, so they're naturally taking a step behind the new car. I want to avoid the bloated limited trim I tested. Options such as head-up displays, crossbars and premium floor mats come with destination $ 3,500, but with destination $ 47,000 including destinations, the math of this trim is not the best. LE, SE, and XSE are sweet spots, and they make little or no compromises about the features that really matter.
