BYD vs Tesla in Europe: 1.5MW Flash Chargers Aim to Beat Supercharger V4 by 2027
China's BYD, which aims to become the world's largest automaker, wants to envelop Europe with thousands of megawatt-capable EV chargers in the coming years. The automaker has said it wants to build the latest 3000 flash chargers across the continent by 2027. Just in case, BYD's dual DC fast chargers can deliver up to 1,500 kilowatts (i.e. 1.5 megawatts) of power, but not all cars will receive such a high input.

All EVs with CCS2 charging ports can be charged with BYD's European flash chargers, but only cars with the latest generation of blade batteries in China can make the most of their very powerful dispensers. But so far, there are only one car sold in Europe, with the whopping $133,000 (€115,000) Denza Z9GT, which can go from 10-70% in just five minutes.

In the grand scheme of things, BYD is still a relatively small player in the European EV charging game. By comparison, Tesla has more than 20,000 DC fast chargers that provide energy to EV drivers in Europe, but the supercharger isn't as powerful as BYD's latest dispenser. For example, the latest supercharger V4, which is still very rare, can supply up to 500kW, while the old V3 stall is limited to 250kW.

All, BYD has just begun in this part of the world. Following Europe, the Chinese company plans to expand its ultra-fast charging network to Canada. According to a recent social media job posting posted on different platforms, BYD is currently looking for a business development manager who can start working to deploy the Flash Charging network in Canada.
There's no word on when the first dispensers will be up and running, but it will probably be slower than earlier as we look at how automakers are trying to get a foothold in the Canadian market after the government cut import fees and imposed an allocation of 49,000 cars made in China this year. Back in Europe, the first flash chargers are already online in Germany and the UK, and have been followed by thousands in just a few years.
